High efficiency anaerobic digester with thermal hydrolysis unit
Anaerobic digestion used widely at sewage plants is a very useful treatment process as it reduces sludge volume and allows the recovery of biogas. At many plants, however, the thickened digested sludge is incinerated and so from the viewpoint of reducing CO2 emissions there is the need to reduce sludge volume further still. MKK's high-efficiency thermal hydrolysis unit is incorporated in an anaerobic digestion process to reduce discharge sludge volume further and to enhance biogas recovery in comparison with conventional anaerobic digestion process.
Features
- 10 percent increase in the decomposition (digestion) rate of organic matter, allowing a reduction in sludge volume.
- 10 - 30 percent increase in the amount of biogas produced.
- Reduces digestion period down to around 15 days.
- Increases dehydration rate of digested sludge by 5 - 7 percent.
- Allows a 30 - 50 percent reduction in dehydrated sludge volume compared with conventional systems
- Energy consumption for the whole system is almost same to the conventional anaerobic digestion system thanks to good heat balanced process design. The heated digestion sludge treated by thermal hydrolysis unit is sent back to digestion tank thereby helping the heating of digestion tank.
- Thermal hydrolysis unit is a very simple one and is easy to run and maintain, applicable for the existing plant and new plant, enabling cost reduction as a whole system by adopting this unit.
Note: MKK conducted a joint research on this technology with the Japan Sewage Works Agency since 2006, and in April 2012 it received high technical evaluation as "An Anaerobic Digestion Systems for Recovering Energy."
