Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha collaborates on project for long-term biofuel usage in vessels

Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Ltd. (President: Toshikazu Tanaka; Headquarters: Kawasaki City; hereinafter called "MKK") announce the cooperation with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (President: Takaya Soga; Headquarters: Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo; hereinafter called "NYK Line") and Singapore-based non-profit organization Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in Project LOTUS*, focuses on technical cooperation and risk assessment of the use of oil purifier.

During the six-months trial period, car carrier ships operated by NYK Line will utilize a blend of Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) biodiesel. VLSFO is used as general marine fuel, while FAME is the most widely used biodiesel today, derived from processed used cooking oil. The project aims to research the long-term impact of biofuel operation on the vessels' fuel supply systems, including performance and operational aspects.

MKK will offer comprehensive support throughout the project, focusing on its Mitsubishi Selfjector equipped in the vessels. This contains evaluating the effectiveness of the oil purifier in removing impurities in the fuel, assessing any potential impact or technical issues on the engine, and establishing optimal maintenance practices for prolonged biofuel use.

Biofuel is currently recognized as an effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. MKK has committed to establish a proper handling methods of using biofuel for oil purifiers, by having participated in various on land and onboard trials related to biofuel. Through our participation in project LOTUS, we aspire to contribute to both safe vessel operations and the realization of a carbon-neutral society, by utilizing the knowledge and expertise of oil purifier operations accumulated over many years.
